- PLATFORMS (CJR) — 2025 is certainly off to a roaring start: Meta is reversing course on fact-checking and changing its moderation policies to the detriment of women and the LGBTQIA+ community. A harmful shift that echoes X's own and prompts us — once again — to question the dysfunctional relationship between these major platforms and the press.
- GOOGLE (BBC) — The problem isn't limited to social media alone. In recent months, even Google, long perceived as a stable partner for the press, has changed its practices. Rolling out AI left and right and modifying its algorithm, the company has changed how information is distributed on the internet, to the point that some independent media outlets fear being rendered invisible.
- INTERNET (The Verge) — In 2024, news sites have disappeared from the Internet, taking years of work with them. Since 2005, more than a quarter of local media sites have vanished in the United States while AI-generated content proliferates, compromising access to reliable information. Preserving and archiving the Internet has become a major priority that everyone can help address.
- LAW (Politis) — The start of this year will also be marked by journalist Ariane Lavrilleux being summoned for a possible investigation. A reminder that freedom of the press as well as the protection of journalists and their sources are fragile principles to defend. 2024 saw, for example, the creation of Ofalp, dedicated to documenting attacks on freedom of the press.
- FAR RIGHT (La Déferlante) — In 2024, conservative billionaires like Vincent Bolloré continued to tighten their grip on the media, even becoming interested in journalism schools. Beyond undermining press independence, these successive power grabs contribute to spreading far-right discourse through these outlets. Some approaches to address this in this debate published in the pages of La Déferlante.
- TRUST (The Atlantic) — As social media struggles with instability, news outlets face a crisis of confidence, making it all the more crucial to build strong connections with readers. What if the news industry took inspiration from influencers? Journalist Julia Angwin highlights the importance of learning from content creators who have successfully built engaged communities.
- TRENDS (Reuters Institute) — The challenges ahead for 2025 are clearly numerous and it would be impossible to list them all. Artificial intelligence, platforms, trust crisis… To gain clarity, the Reuters Institute surveyed media leaders to understand what their priorities were for this new year and their approaches for the coming months.
- NEW MEDIA (Channels with Peter Kafka) — In 2024, independent media outlets demonstrated that it was possible to produce impactful journalism, funded by readers and launched with modest resources. Among them, 404 Media, which celebrated its first anniversary last year, and which describes in this podcast its journey, business model, and ambitions.
- MANAGEMENT (Medianes) — Building an independent and virtuous press obviously requires sound management. It's a blind spot for some emerging young media outlets, where the pressure to succeed sometimes outweighs team well-being. The start of the year can be an opportunity to take stock and implement new practices.
- INDEPENDENCE (Medians) — A resolutely independent press, despite the challenges, is possible and necessary. Transparency, collaboration, inclusivity… The levers to achieve this are many. We have therefore brought together a selection of best practices and concrete examples that can inspire you in 2025.
