- TRANSITION (Medians) — How do you turn the page on a cherished project and prepare to write what comes next? - INDEPENDENCE (The Verge) — For once, we're highlighting the excellent work of The Verge. But when you clicked the previous link, you may have been surprised by a paywall. In this post, the editorial team justifies this change by their desire to strengthen their independence and grow their business, without being forced to chase traffic from Google and social media.
- AI (Reuters Institute) — From ChatGPT usage to partnerships with OpenAI, artificial intelligence has become established in the press. But some of the companies behind these tools cast a veil of opacity over their fundings. Understanding the political and economic interests behind these tools has become essential for newsrooms concerned with preserving their independence.
- PLATFORMS (Digiday) — Bluesky is hoping to lure journalists and media outlets by positioning itself as the obvious alternative to X. To do so, the platform promises to give newsrooms visibility and freedom. Sound familiar? Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others made the same pledges years ago before backing out. Buyer beware.
- COMMUNITY (Mediapart) — For media outlets, year-end often means taking stock and publishing impact reports. For the occasion, Mediapart rolls out the red carpet and takes inspiration from the Oscars. It invites readers to vote for their favourite "performances", such as Anne Hidalgo in Les Dents de la maire or the Estrosi couple in Ritch de Nice. An interesting way to showcase its work while engaging its community.
- SOURCES (Louie Media and Disclose) — For whistleblowers, disobeying is no easy feat. By refusing orders or exposing practices, they can face severe repercussions. Yet their role is essential, and without them, many cases would never have come to light. Journalists Ariane Lavrilleux and Timothée Vinchon give them a voice in the three episodes of Me, Disobey?.
- LOCAL PRESS (New York Focus) — New York Focus, an independent newsroom dedicated to New York State, asked itself what readers expected from local news. To find out, the team traveled the territory and organized meetings.
