For you, as for your media, year-end is the perfect time for reflection and fresh starts. Use this moment to take stock with your readers. This transparency exercise will allow you to highlight the work accomplished by your team and remind your community of the importance of their financial support.
Highlight your content
Every year, ProPublica publishes a report on the work carried out by its team of journalists over the past 12 months. Rather than simply listing a series of links to their articles and reports, the media outlet chose to highlight the photographs, graphics, videos, and animations that illustrated its stories. The result is visually compelling and effectively summarizes the diversity of topics covered.
Speaking in numbers
Every year, Stupid Economics releases a video to keep its community informed about its accomplishments, projects, and notably its financial health. At the same time, the media makes a complete financial report available to its audience in a public online spreadsheet. It's a way to remind viewers of the importance of donations and to show, in concrete terms, what their contributions make possible.
What next?
Beyond its successes, the media outlet The Tyee discusses its goals and aspirations for the coming year. In doing so, it clearly communicates to its readers its ambitions regarding its business model as well as diversity issues within its newsroom. Another example comes from openDemocracy, which publishes every two years a strategic report detailing its audience objectives (number of website visitors, social media followers) as well as its investigative projects.
To go further
- Since its creation in 2016, the media outlet Stupid Economics (supported by Médianes) publishes its financial statement at the end of each year, its budget forecast for the following year, as well as an explanatory video on its channel. To learn more, listen to our podcast Chemins with Valentin Levetti, co-founder of Stupid Economics.
- What do we mean by impact media? Often, we think of that journalistic ability to highlight the stories of those who find solutions to social and ecological problems. Beyond the editorial stance characteristic of constructive journalism, how do we concretely measure a media's impact, from foundations to post-production?
- If you thought you could leave mathematics behind by going into media, think again. Without needing to be a data analyst, a solid understanding of your data can prove essential. It will allow you to set useful objectives for your growth and better understand your audience's expectations.
- When the Advent calendar gives way to the year's schedule, it's time to get back to business. Year-end review, roadmap, financial check-in, priorities to address… The art of focusing on what matters to plan the year's highlights without burning out.
